History:
Long ago, there were no humans on Earth, only fairies. They looked like humans, all right, but there's more to them than meets the eye. Each fairy had its animal familiar, and its element. They were peaceful times, with each element balancing out another, and the spirit fairies, who were given the ability to see one’s true self and perform basic defense magic, granting the elements. The Council resolved all arguments between the elementally different fairies, as clashes were bound to occur once in a while. This council was made up of one powerful fairy from each element:
There was Darian, dark of appearance, but light of heart. He was the kind of person who wanted to be friends with everyone, but knew he couldn't. He was always full of mirth; always his laughter in the forests could be heard. Though he can be serious at times, he’s generally an abstract figure. Often, his humor can turn wry or sarcastic and he favors irony, sometimes even stooping to word games and speaking in riddles. He can be gruff and distant when touched upon a subject of sentimental value, but kind and warm-hearted when giving pep talks to another. Some view him as a confusing character, and others merely let him be. He represented the water fairies. A peregrine falcon was his familiar.
There was Tyrani, the representative of the fire fairies. An African beauty she was, with deep chocolate skin and even deeper eyes. In her prime, she radiated savage, protective strength. She didn't tolerate any impudence and made a terrific leader. With her clear, calculating mind and fierce nature, barely anything stood in her way. She was a creature to be admired when handling situations, and could give cheeky fairies a tongue-lashing like they never saw. With her keen eyes and even sharper tongue, it was safe to say that many feared her. Short tempered and fierce, a mountain lion was her familiar.
Then, there was tiny little Sasha of the air fairies. She was light, pleasant, a little mild, but definitely a kindred spirit. She was the forgiving one with a soft heart and bright way of looking at things. She was benevolent and stayed out of most disputes, looking out for all fairies, not only her own. She rarely spoke during heated discussions and debates, but she chose a good viewpoint to see from, and made sure all the voices were heard. Blonde-haired, blue-eyed, and young, she was a carefree spirit, with a sparrow for her familiar.
You couldn’t forget Monty, the earth fairy of the Council. Rather plain looking, he had hazel eyes, chestnut hair, and a barn owl for his familiar. He was the intelligent one, solving arguments with pure fact. His eyes were gentle, but seemed to be able to pierce into your very soul. He could be very omniscient when he wished, and always seemed to understand. He had the quiet empathy that no other council member could offer, and had a diplomatic way of presenting things so as to keep everyone satisfied. He saw conflicts before they happened, resolving them beforehand, and his wisdom branched out from compassion, to philosophy, to history.
Finally, there was Heather, the spirit fairy. Red hair, green eyes, freckles, and a snappy attitude – she was the image of an independent spirit. She was in an impermeable shell. Impatient, rough around the edges, sometimes exasperated, but when you pleased her, or gave her a compliment, you'd see the crinkles of her eyes as she valiantly tries to hide the smile. She pulls all the others together, harbors very strong opinions, and knows her values. She thinks more with her heart than her mind, and her heart is almost always right. Her familiar was a dark brown rabbit.
But all good things have to come to an end. The spirit fairies, tired of sorting young fairies into kingdoms, separated into light and dark. Only Heather remained, tirelessly sorting the newborn fairies into elements. The dark fought to overrule the Council, the light to protect them. Of course, the Council themselves had to resolve the argument. They did win eventually, banishing the light to Heaven and the dark to hell, but in the process, all the magic of the Earth was drained. There were no more fairies, only humans, for this was the price to be paid. The ways of the fairy were forgotten, and recorded history began…
The plot:
Our story takes place present day.
People, most complete strangers, are experiencing odd things – animals following them around, fretful dreams, even growing wings. And they know – it’s not normal.
And then there is the other group of strangers: The odd ones, thrown from their homes for pairs of wings on their backs, or possessing strange powers that they cannot control.
Some come from long lines of families, all with a common trait: magic. Their family histories stretch back to the fairies, but it is kept a secret from all outside peers, sometimes even the children.
These are the descendants of the Council, their magic returned to them to fight. Fight what, you ask?
The light and the dark fairies have broken out of their prisons, ready to rule the Earth in their own way. The elements have returned, and these people must be ready for the fight to begin. With only those strange, talking animals, their intuition, and perhaps some vague history passed down from generation to generation to help them, they must once again banish the light and dark to their homes as war is being waged.
What will they do?
